Men's JewelryBuying jewelry for a man can be intimidating. Most of us are much more comfortable choosing bracelets, necklaces and earrings for women and often don't know where to begin when shopping for a man. Being familiar with the personality type of the man you're shopping for can't be emphasized enough. A man with a conservative side is not going to wear anything that's too shiny or flashy. A man who dresses to impress is not aspiring towards understatement. He's going to enjoy getting as much attention as he can, so choose accordingly. Rings come in different shapes, some wide, others thin. The wider the band, the more masculine it is. A band can be embedded with a stone. Stones are usually symbolic of someone's birth date, so make sure you know the day the man you're buying a ring for was born, so his ring will be more than great looking. It will be a personal statement.
It's safe to say that the bigger the stone, the more expensive it is. There are also some stones that are extremely pricey in any size. Those that immediately come to mind are black opals, sapphires, and emeralds. Your budget will determine how flamboyant a stone you pick, but it's important to remember that the gift has to match the tastes of the man you're giving it to. Sometimes it helps to get someone else's opinion who knows him -- or even to ask the opinion of a man who may be standing next to you. Once the gem has been decided upon, are you setting in a platinum ring or a silver one? How about gold? Again, budget will play a leading role in what you ultimately select, but try and visualize the man who'll be wearing it too. How would he look with it on? Cufflinks add elegant detail to a man's overall outfit. They're not just an accessory. They're a statement that a man leaves no stone unturned when getting dressed. It helps if you have a tie or shirt in mind. How would they look on each sleeve of a particular shirt? How would they complement a specific tie? Cufflinks should be appropriate for the occasion. Wedding and prom cufflinks have a more decorative function that those you'd wear during a business lunch with an important client. Watches are the most important piece of jewelry a man can own. When choosing a leather band, ask yourself if the man you're buying the watch for tends to prefer brown or black shoes. The leather on his watch band should always match that of his shoes and belt. More flexible is a metal band made of stainless steel or titanium at the more reasonably priced end and platinum at the most luxurious. Brands of watches that instantly impress are of course Movado, Tag Heuer and Rolex. Of course men wear bracelets and necklaces more and more these days. They complement casual wear and even shirtless days at the beach or pool. A thin chain can easily break. Thick link chains are sturdier, but can be perceived as ostentatious. When buying jewelry for men and women, when in doubt, it's safe to say that erring on the side of modesty, is best.
